Massive and Massless Neutrinos on Unbalanced Seesaws

چکیده
The observation of neutrino oscillations requires new physics beyond the standard model (SM). A SM-like gauge theory with p lepton families can be extended by introducing q heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos but preserving its SU(2)L×U(1)Y gauge symmetry. The overall neutrino mass matrix M turns out to be a symmetric (p+q)×(p+q) matrix. Given p > q, the rank of M is in general equal to 2q, corresponding to 2q non-zero mass eigenvalues. The existence of (p − q) massless left-handed Majorana neutrinos is an exact consequence of the model, independent of the usual approximation made in deriving the Type-I seesaw relation between the effective p×p light Majorana neutrino mass matrix Mν and the q×q heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix MR. In other words, the numbers of massive leftand right-handed neutrinos are fairly matched. A good example to illustrate this “seesaw fair play rule” is the minimal seesaw model with p = 3 and q = 2, in which one massless neutrino sits on the unbalanced seesaw.

A note on Majorana neutrinos, leptonic CKM and electron electric dipole moment
The electric dipole moment of the electron, de, is known to vanish up to threeloops in the standard model with massless neutrinos. However, if neutrinos are massive Majorana particles, we obtain the result that de induced by leptonic CKM mechanism is non-vanishing at two-loop order, and it applies to all massive Majorana neutrino models.
متن کامل2 Nonequilibrium massless neutrinos
The neutrino role in primordial nucleosynthesis is reviewed. The importance of nonequilibrium effects is emphasized both for the standard massless and possibly massive neutrinos. The upper bound on tau neutrino mass is presented. A spatial variation of primordial abundances and a possibility of observing them by precise measurements of the CMB anisotropy are considered. The nucleosyn-thesis boun...
متن کاملMassive Neutrinos in Almost-Commutative Geometry
In the noncommutative formulation of the standard model of particle physics by A. Connes and A. Chamseddine [1] one of the three generations of fermions has to possess a massless neutrino. This formulation is consistent with neutrino oscillation experiments and the known bounds of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix (PMNS matrix). But future experiments which may be able to detect neutri...
متن کاملTev Neutrino Physics at the Large Hadron Collider∗
I argue that TeV neutrino physics might become an exciting frontier of particle physics in the era of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The origin of non-zero but tiny masses of three known neutrinos is probably related to the existence of some heavy degrees of freedom, such as heavy Majorana neutrinos or heavy Higgs bosons, via a TeV-scale seesaw mechanism. I take a few examples to illustrate h...
متن کاملOn Solar Neutrino Problem
The current neutrino oscillation theory asserts that neutrinos are massive subatomic particles, and can undergo their flavor oscillation. First in this article, we examine carefully the current oscillation theory, and argue that a massless neutrino oscillation mechanism based on the Weyl equations for neutrinos is also a feasible theory. This massless neutrino oscillation mechanism resolves bot...
